I am excited to share my latest hard-surface project: a 3D model of a classic compass. The main goal of this artwork was to achieve a high level of realism and environmental storytelling through material wear and tear.
Modeling (Blender): High and low poly modeling workflow. I focused on clean topology and precise proportions for the casing, mechanisms, and the dial.
Texturing (Substance 3D Painter): Full PBR workflow. I created custom materials from scratch, layering aged brass, oxidation, dirt build-up in the crevices, and micro-scratches on the glass to give the prop a sense of history.
Rendering & Lighting (Marmoset Toolbag): Custom studio lighting setup tailored to highlight the light interaction across the metallic and roughness maps. Ray-traced reflections were used to make the metal and glass pop.
